It all made sense, Genevieve thought later that night, curled up on her bed with Butterscotch and her laptop. She had sent an email through Janessa Kelley’s contact page over an hour ago, pretending to be a journalist doing a piece on healthy living and private yoga studios, and since then she’d been blearily googling articles on sudden weight loss, which inevitably led to articles on cancer and other debilitating diseases, knowing she should stop, somehow unable to do so. Was her mother catastrophically ill and trying to make up for lost time with her only child?

She was struggling with whether or not to call her and simply ask if something was wrong. But Genevieve didn’t know how to talk to her mother that way. Their subjects were always safe ones, their conversations light-hearted. Thinking this once again brought her around to the fact that her mother was struggling in the same way: she wanted to tell Genevieve but didn’t know how.

Stop it, Genevieve thought, you’re being ridiculous. It could be anything.

Then why did it look as if her mother had shed half a dozen pounds in her short time in town? Why did her trademark vivacity seem to be draining from her?

She sighed and snapped her laptop shut. It wasn’t like her to ruminate or indulge in negative thinking patterns. Brooding was a Brandon thing. As if agreeing with her unspoken thoughts, Butterscotch laid her head in Genevieve’s lap and looked up at her reprovingly.

“I’m not thinking straight,” Genevieve confessed. “I should just go to sleep, right?” The dog thumped her tail lazily on the bed in half-hearted agreement. Genevieve pulled off her fuzzy socks and slipped her feet beneath the covers.

But then she remembered the way her mother had looked at her when they’d been about to say goodbye. She’d wanted to tell her something, Genevieve thought. She was sure of it.

Just call her.

She reached decisively for her phone, and then said, “Oh!” as it vibrated at her touch. Butterscotch woofed curiously. “It’s Janessa,” Genevieve said.

Janessa had texted: Would be happy to set up an interview. I’m free tomorrow between nine and noon

Genevieve thought quickly, her heart beating fast. She’d have to skip school—she needed to be home by eleven thirty to get ready for her shift, and the drive to Mountain Ridge could take an hour or more with traffic. After a quick calculation, she typed: Great! How does 9:30 sound? And should I come to your studio?

That works. What paper did you say you were with?

With easy confidence, Genevieve typed the name of her high school paper, The Pinyon Times. She wasn’t too concerned; if Janessa happened to google it, she’d come up with another plan.

Sounds good, came the swift reply. See you tomorrow

Grinning at Butterscotch, Genevieve kicked off the covers. “We did it! And now, how to deal with Brandon?” Her plan would not work with him there, plus he’d never approve of her meeting with Janessa. She thought it over and then sent a text.
